Is a Jordan 2 Day Tour Worth the Petra Entrance Fee?

Worth it if you actually walk two days

A jordan 2 day tour costs 55 JOD in conservation fees for two consecutive days, and that figure is the whole argument. Petra is not a monument, it is a valley city: the Siq, the Treasury facade, the Royal Tombs, the Great Temple, and the 800-odd rock-cut steps to the Monastery. Day one alone rarely gets past the main colonnade before the legs give out. Split across two days, the per-day cost drops to roughly 27.5 JOD, which is the cheapest way to see the Nabataean rock-cut architecture properly. Petra tours built around one rushed day leave the far end of the site unseen. The two-day fee pays off for anyone reasonably mobile who intends to hike; it does not pay off for cruise-style visitors who will only photograph the Treasury and turn back.

What makes it worth it

  • Second day costs nothing extra beyond the fee
  • Monastery hike only realistic with two days
  • Fee funds active conservation of the site
  • Early 06:00 entry beats crowds and heat
  • Covers 800+ steps of Nabataean rock-cut architecture

Keep in mind

  • Day-trippers waste half the 55 JOD
  • Long uphill walking, limited shade on trails
  • Optional horse, donkey and guide costs add up
  • Midday crowds compress the Siq badly

Bottom line: If you plan to hike beyond the Treasury, the jordan 2 day tour pays for itself; if not, buy a single-day Petra ticket and spend the difference elsewhere.

What you'll see

What you'll see at Jordan 2 Day

Al-Khazneh

Al-Khazneh

This 40-meter-tall facade is the most famous monument in Petra and was carved directly into the sandstone cliff. Despite its name, it was originally built as a royal tomb.

The Monastery

The Monastery

Located high in the mountains, this massive structure is larger than the Treasury and requires a 800-step climb. It is one of the most significant monuments for those on a jordan 2 day tour.

The Siq

The Siq

This narrow, 1.2-kilometer-long gorge is the main entrance to the city and features remnants of ancient water channels. It provides a dramatic approach for any jordan 2 day tour.

Royal Tombs

Royal Tombs

A series of large, grand mausoleums carved into the eastern cliffs that glow with vibrant colors at sunset. These are essential stops during a jordan 2 day tour.

Great Temple

An expansive complex representing the urban heart of the ancient city with impressive columns and foundations. It offers a glimpse into the daily life of the Nabataeans during your jordan 2 day tour.

The experience

What visiting Jordan 2 Day is really like

You reach the gate in the 06:00–09:00 arrival window, before the coaches from Amman turn into the car park. The light is still low and the Siq is quiet. You walk the 1.2 kilometres downhill, past the votive niches and the water channel cut into the left-hand wall, and the rock closes overhead until the sky is a ribbon.

Read more Show less

Then the fissure opens and you stop, because everyone stops. Al-Khazneh fills the gap ahead, its urn pitted with old rifle marks. You stay ten minutes, or twenty. You carry on into the widening valley, past the Street of Facades to the theatre, and climb the Royal Tombs for the view back across the basin.

Day two you go up. The 800 steps to Ad-Deir start behind the Basin restaurant and take about 50 minutes at a steady pace, with Bedouin stalls selling mint tea at the switchbacks. You sit on the ledge opposite the Monastery facade and let your legs recover. Your jordan 2 day tour ticket is checked again at the gate — the conservation fee covers both consecutive days, so nothing else is needed.

By 15:00 you are walking the Siq in reverse, uphill now, the sandstone gone red. A second-day itinerary buys you this: the site twice, at different hours, in different light.

Jordan 2 Day Tour: Petra and Wadi Rum

A jordan 2 day tour links the rose-red Nabataean city of Petra with the sandstone valleys of Wadi Rum, travelling south from Amman along the King's Highway. Guests walk the Siq to the Treasury, then transfer to a Bedouin desert camp for the night before returning north past the Dead Sea escarpment. Most jordan 2 day tour tickets include a licensed local guide, 4x4 desert transfer, and site entry through the Jordan Pass system.

The 55 JOD conservation fee at Petra buys two consecutive days — an unusual admission structure that reveals how the site was designed to be read, not glanced at.

The Nabataeans carved this city from Cretaceous sandstone beginning in the fourth century BCE, positioning it where caravan routes carrying frankincense, myrrh and bitumen converged. Swiss traveller Johann Ludwig Burckhardt reached the ruins in 1812, the first European to do so in six centuries. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1985. Those three dates frame everything a jordan 2 day tour attempts to cover.

What matters now is scale. Petra occupies roughly 264 square kilometres, of which a fraction has been excavated. The approach runs through the Siq, a 1.2-kilometre fissure in the rock, narrowing to three metres in places and rising 180 metres overhead. At its end stands Al-Khazneh, the Treasury, 40 metres of Hellenistic facade cut downward into the cliff rather than built upward from a foundation. Beyond it the valley widens into the Street of Facades, the Roman-era theatre carved for 8,500 spectators, the Great Temple complex, and the Royal Tombs ranged along the eastern escarpment.

The architecture rewards patience. Nabataean masons worked from the top of each facade downward, eliminating the need for scaffolding. Their hydraulic engineering — ceramic pipes, cisterns, rock-cut channels still visible along the Siq walls — sustained a population estimated at 20,000 in an environment receiving under 150 millimetres of rain annually. Ad-Deir, the Monastery, sits 800 rock-cut steps above the valley floor, its 47-metre facade the largest carved structure on the site.

This is why a jordan 2 day itinerary exists as a category rather than a compromise. The single-day visitor sees the Siq, the Treasury and perhaps the theatre. A two-day trip through Jordan's headline landmarks reaches the Monastery, the High Place of Sacrifice, the Byzantine church mosaics excavated in the 1990s, and the outlying Little Petra at Siq al-Barid. Many jordan 2 day tour tours extend the second day toward Wadi Rum's granite corridors or the Dead Sea shore, treating Petra as an anchor rather than a destination in isolation.

The site sits directly below Wadi Musa, Jordan, a town that grew around the visitor economy after 1985. Guides registered with the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority work from the visitor centre near the gate, and a jordan 2 day tour tour typically pairs a licensed local guide with the Bedouin families whose knowledge of the back routes predates every excavation report.

The Treasury was cut downward into the cliff rather than built upward from a foundation.

Dress code

Modest clothing is recommended for your jordan 2 day tour to respect local customs and protect against the intense sun. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are ideal for desert conditions.

Bags & security

Keep your personal belongings secure at all times while exploring during your jordan 2 day tour. There are no large locker facilities, so travel light and bring only essentials.

Photography

Photography is permitted throughout the site, though the use of drones requires prior official permission. Capture the morning light in the Siq early in your jordan 2 day tour tour for the best results.

Families & strollers

Children under 12 enter free during daylight hours for a jordan 2 day tour family experience. Ensure children remain hydrated and wear comfortable footwear for extensive walking.

Accessibility

The terrain is rugged and ancient, so sections of the jordan 2 day tour can be challenging for those with limited mobility. Visitors may utilize local shuttle services or animal transport within the park.

Food & drink

Carry sufficient water and snacks to sustain your energy throughout your jordan 2 day tour. Limited food options exist within the archaeological park at higher prices.

The story

Historical Foundations for Your Jordan 2 Day Tour

The Nabataeans were nomads before they were builders. Greek historian Diodorus Siculus records an Antigonid raid on their desert stronghold in 312 BCE — the earliest firm date attached to Petra. The raiders were repelled. What they had come to seize was not land but wealth: frankincense and myrrh moving north from Arabia Felix, bitumen drawn from the Dead Sea. Control of those caravan routes, not conquest, made the city. Any serious jordan 2 day tour begins with that commercial logic, because the rock-cut façades are its dividend. Petra's monumental phase belongs to the first century BCE and the first century CE. Aretas IV, who ruled from 9 BCE to 40 CE, presided over the greatest expansion. Under him the Khazneh was most likely carved — a royal tomb, not a treasury, despite the Bedouin name and the bullet marks left by those who believed the urn held gold. The masons worked downward from the cliff top, cutting scaffolding-free. Their engineers were subtler still: ceramic pipelines, cisterns and diversion dams tamed flash floods in the Siq and sustained perhaps twenty thousand residents in a desert. Nabataean Aramaic inscriptions across the site record the names of the dead. This is the substance most Petra Jordan tour itineraries skim past. Decline came by degrees. Rome annexed the kingdom in 106 CE under Trajan, and sea routes gradually drained the overland incense trade. An earthquake on 19 May 363 CE destroyed roughly half the city; another in 551 finished the Byzantine settlement. By the Crusader era only garrisons remained, and Western memory of the place lapsed for six centuries until Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, disguised as a Muslim pilgrim, reached the Siq on 22 August 1812. Excavation followed slowly — the Great Temple from 1993, the Byzantine church scrolls in 1993 — and much of the site remains unexcavated. What survives is sandstone banded red, ochre and violet, which earned the modern epithet Rose City. UNESCO inscribed Petra in 1985. Visitors weighing jordan 2 day tour tickets should know that two days is roughly the minimum for the Siq, the Royal Tombs, the Colonnaded Street and the eight hundred steps to the Monastery — the scale defeats a single afternoon. Guided jordan 2 day tour tours and independent walking both reward that patience; a shorter jordan 2 day tour tour covers ground the archaeology does not.

312 BCE

Diodorus Siculus records the Nabataeans repelling a raid by the forces of Antigonus I, the first dated mention of Petra.

1st c. BCE

Nabataean masons begin carving monumental rock-cut tombs and build the hydraulic network of pipes, cisterns and dams.

9 BCE-40 CE

The reign of Aretas IV marks Petra's peak, the period to which the Khazneh is generally attributed.

106 CE

Emperor Trajan annexes the Nabataean kingdom into the Roman province of Arabia Petraea.

363 CE

An earthquake on 19 May destroys around half the city's structures and its water system.

551 CE

A second major earthquake ends meaningful Byzantine occupation of the site.

1812

Swiss traveller Johann Ludwig Burckhardt enters the Siq on 22 August, returning Petra to European knowledge.

1985

UNESCO inscribes Petra on the World Heritage List, and systematic excavation of the Great Temple follows from 1993.

Petra then Wadi Rum

We booked a jordan 2 day tour from Amman and the pacing worked better than we expected — Petra in the cool of the morning, then desert by late afternoon. Walking out of the Siq at around eight in the morning, the light hits the Treasury facade and the temperature is still bearable. Bring more water than you think you need in July.

Siq at first light

The Nabataean carvings along the Siq are easy to miss if you rush, so ask the guide to slow down at the water channels and the votive niches. Our driver handled the Desert Highway efficiently and we still reached Wadi Rum before the shadows got long. A solid Jordan landmarks itinerary for a short trip.

Sleeping under stars

The Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum was the highlight for me — dinner cooked in a zarb pit under the sand, then absolute silence and more stars than I have ever seen. Night temperatures dropped enough that I was glad of the blanket even in May. The 4x4 route past Lawrence's Spring and the red dunes takes a couple of hours.

Long days, worth it

Be realistic about the distances involved on any Petra Wadi Rum tour — there is a lot of road between the sites and you will be up early both mornings. That said, our guide's commentary on Nabataean trade routes made the driving time pass. I would have liked a little longer at the Royal Tombs.

Monastery climb was fine

Everyone warns you about the 800 steps up to Al-Deir but it is manageable if you go slowly and stop at the tea stalls. We did the climb on the first day of our jordan 2 day tour and my legs recovered enough for the desert walking on day two. The view over the Wadi Araba from the top is worth the effort.

Jerash surprised us

I expected Petra to overshadow everything but the colonnaded street at Jerash and the oval forum genuinely held their own. Our jordan 2 day tour tickets covered both sites and entry was straightforward with the guide handling the paperwork. February meant cold mornings and green hills, which not many people picture when they think of Jordan.

Good guide, honest pacing

Our guide grew up near Wadi Musa and pointed out rock-cut tombs and cisterns we would have walked straight past. He was upfront about what we could realistically see in the time available rather than overselling it. Among the جولة الأردن ليومين options we compared, this one felt the least rushed.

Floating at the Dead Sea

Ending at the lowest point on earth after two days of walking was a smart bit of scheduling. The salt crust cuts, so wear sandals into the water and do not shave that morning — a lesson I learned the hard way. Late afternoon light on the water was soft and the crowds had mostly thinned.

Hot but manageable

September in Wadi Rum was still fierce at midday, so most of the jeep route ran early morning and again after four. The high place of sacrifice trail at Petra is steep and exposed — skip it if you are travelling with small kids. Overall the jordan 2 day tour tours we looked at were all similar in structure and this one delivered what it promised.

Second day was the best

Petra is the reason you come but Wadi Rum is what I still think about — the scale of those sandstone jebels does not translate to photographs at all. Our small group jordan 2 day tour tour had eight people, which meant we actually got answers to our questions. Sunset from the top of a dune, with the rock going from orange to violet, was the moment it all clicked.
